OpenAI announces launch of browser to compete with Google Search

Two major artificial intelligence companies — OpenAI and Perplexity — are preparing to launch AI-powered search browsers in competition with Google Search.

According to Euronews, on Wednesday, Perplexity AI announced that it has launched an independent search engine called “Komi” for Mac and Windows, which it claims has outperformed traditional browsers like Google Chrome and Apple Safari.

Currently, this search engine is only available to those who have subscribed to Perplexity Max and to a limited group of individuals who were invited to test the new platform.

During testing, a user asked Perplexity to generate a shopping list for two different recipes using a grocery website and then requested the combined recipe instructions.

Notably, Komi includes an AI assistant capable of clicking, typing, submitting, and auto-filling on behalf of the user. The assistant can also manage users’ emails and calendars, while highlighting important news in the feed.

On the other hand, not much information is available yet about OpenAI’s browser.

These browser announcements come at a time when Google Search is facing challenges. Last week, the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice recommended rejecting Google’s appeal against a €4.1 billion fine over anti-competitive behavior.

In 2024, a U.S. District Judge ruled that Google had illegally maintained a monopoly. Google is also facing antitrust investigations in the United States, Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
